The First Time I Met Someone Else with Anosmia
Posted under personal-stories ·Written by Heather Ackmann
Anosmia, as you can imagine, isn’t a very common affliction—or at least it’s not something that’s talked about or noticed very often. So the opportunity to meet fellow anosmics, in person, is a rare event. In fact, I’ve only actually met one other person with anosmia in my lifetime. Sure, I’ve “met” a lot of people through this website and through the Facebook group and I’ve often talked with people who have known at least one other person with anosmia, but in person (myself) I’ve only met one man, and I don’t even remember his name.
I met him when I was working my old high school job at PetSmart in the aquatics department. It was getting close to closing time and I was bagging his fish when a fellow employee came by and asked if he could take over bagging so I could go clean the bird room for him. You see, the bird room smelled really bad. Apparently, there was a plumbing problem where no matter how clean the room was the smell was unbearable to any olfie. And so, the task was always left for me. I explained this little fact to the customer along with the detail that I was born without a sense of smell and the man’s jaw dropped. I mistook his reaction for the mere amusement that most feel when learning that such a disability exists and so I started to explain what anosmia was in more detail. And that’s when he stopped me:
“No, I understand perfectly,” he said, “I can’t smell either! In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever been able to smell.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
And so the bird room waited for a bit as we chatted about our various similarities with anosmia. We talked about how our parents and friends didn’t believe us at first, how people always stupidly asked if we can smell things for them, and of course we compared notes on the various foods we liked and disliked. We were both amazed and overjoyed by all that we had in common.
So, strange PetSmart man, if you are out there…HI!!!!!! You’re still the only other anosmic I’ve ever met in person!

That’s a great story. I still haven’t met any fellow anosmics in person. Maybe some day.

Must be a great experience! As a fellow congenital I can’t wait to meet another in person. Well, maybe not with not that eagerness, but still.
Looking at the vizu poll you have, apparently it’ll be quite a wait for me – out of nearly 500 votes to date, I’m the only one that’s voted who’s located in Estonia…

My son gave me the adress to this webside. I am also born without smell, but have never met anybody in Norway with anosmia. And when i have told about it to friends or other people they have never heard about it before. Very nice to be known about this webside. To have anosmia is both an advantage and disadvantage. Lucky there are some assistive technology like waterkettle which stop when it is finished; before that I could have caused some fire. The only thing I can feel is chlorin and ammonia when it is to much of it, but this is a gas i have been told. In my teens I got eplipsi, and was informed that the epleptic senter are placed near the smellcenter in the brain, but I do not know it that is correct. I will follow this blog, and nice to have met others with anosmia in a age of 51.

I did not know this website existed either. And I have never smelled anything in my life! I did once meet someone else who also could not smell, about 20 years ago. That is the only face to face encounter I have had with someone esle. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to know about this website. I will keep reading :)

Hi, I`m from Chile and I can`t smell either, I have met other people with anosmia, there`s even one within my own family, but, like you said, there`s very few of us and sometimes is difficult when someone says : ¡Smell This! and you don`t know what to say to them, altough my family and my friends are quite used to it, but is not uncommon that they forget about it.
I really liked this website, beacuse its a place where us anosmics can share things about our condition and also inform people than can smell about this, to tell people that we CAN taste, even if they don`t believe it and also to tell then that this is not such a tragedy as some people think, I live quite a normal life and I avctually like this thing of not smelling :)
