It’s been a while since I’ve posted one of Alan Ackmann’s smell descriptions from my book o’ smells, so I thought I’d start out November with a good one: The Smell of Chex Mix…
CHEX MIX
The dominant scent in chex mix is Worcestershire sauce, which is the
main ingredient used in flavoring. As for the cereal pieces themselves, the corn and rice chex bow to the authoritarian wheat chex squares. So the main smell is wheat chex and the sauce. However, in chex mix the stately smell of Worcestershire sauce lightens up, like a tight-mouthed stamp collector ice-skating in Rockefeller center. Despite the feisty burst of spices, though, the underlying smell is cold. I’m sure it’s a personal connotation, but I think about the fires at Christmastime. When it’s fresh, the smell is omnipresent. Level of Intensity: 7-11 (12-20-04)

Maybe it’s just me, but that was kind of like reading a foreign language. The only thing that I could relate to was the “cold”. When I was little, I thought smelling something was whether it was hot or cold going up your nose. Still, it is interesting to hear somethings smell described, even if it’s like explaining color to a person that has always been blind.
