I haven’t updated this site in a while for one major reason; I’ve been quite sick. But don’t worry—I’m not contagious and I didn’t eat something that had “turned” (and Lord knows how often that happens!). Simply put, I’m pregnant and experiencing what approximately 80% of pregnant women experience: nausea.
That’s right! I’m pregnant, I can’t smell, AND I get morning sickness. And it’s not just in the morning. I’m nauseated ALL the time. Eating makes me sick, not eating makes me sick, thinking about eating makes me sick, watching other people eat makes me sick, listening to other people talk about food makes me sick—the whole thing just makes me sick.
So contrary to popular opinion that pregnant women with anosmia do not experience morning sickness, let me tell you from first-hand experience that that is totally not true! Yes, it’s true that I have one less trigger. And while driving any time we pass a dead skunk or a car with really bad exhaust, my husband reminds me to be thankful for that one less trigger, assuring me that THAT ONE SMELL would have definitely pushed me over the edge IF I could smell.
So, I’m waiting for the day when food tastes good again (and yes, it tastes different to me during pregnancy…but that will be another blog for another day). Hopefully that day will come in a matter of weeks when I hit the 2nd trimester.

Interesting!!! I cannot smell, but did not experience morning sickness. I wonder what triggers it…and if certain smells would heighten it.

I also had horrific morning sickness when I was pregnant. I sometimes threw up 20 times a day. I’d be on the phone at work, feel bad, put the person on hold, run to the bathroom and hurl, and get back on the phone. I figured that I could not put my whole life on hold and quit work, just due to vomiting. So I stuck it out. It ended at about 21 weeks. It was horrible. (And by the way, I can’t smell either)
And I think that the sentence” Eating makes me sick, not eating makes me sick, thinking about eating makes me sick, watching other people eat makes me sick, listening to other people talk about food makes me sickāthe whole thing just makes me sick” is a perfect description for it. I can tell you that I have read that morning sickness is an indication of a hearthy pregnancy that will go to term. Something to do with hormones. There is an old wives tale that says that it also indicates a baby with a lot of hair. Not sure if that is true, but in my daughters case, it was. She was worth every single toss of cookies :)
