A team of German researchers led by Michael Schredl and Boris Stuck studied the affects of smell on dreaming, and the conclusion…

“Pleasant scents give rise to pleasant dreams, and foul smells turn fantasy to phantasmagoria” according to Wired Science’s article (so cleverly titled), To Smell, Perchance to Dream. Hehehe. Got to love a fun Shakespeare reference.

Contrary to belief that a smell can awaken a person, this study showed that when different smells are infused into the air, women (when roused from their sleepy state) reported no memory of smelling any odor that was emitted (be it roses or rotten eggs); however, they did report an emotional shift in what they were dreaming!

And as someone with congenital anosmia I can say “Ha Ha! You can’t change what I’m dreaming about! Take that SMELL! This is for abandoning me!”

Seriously, I’m going to sleep soundly tonight knowing my husband could be burning a pile of baby’s diapers in the house (that sounds like it would smell…would it smell? I don’t know!) and it wouldn’t change my sweet, sweet dreams (um…Vin Diesel doing my laundry while baking me brownies).

Is it bedtime already?!
